what can you expect from our curriculum?

A CLEAR LEARNING PATH

Our curriculum lets you see the forest and the trees, giving you access to as many resources and tools as possible from the very start. We structure our learning starting at 30,000 feet. Each unit has several Essential Questions that drive discovery across the unit. We have clear objectives for the unit and for each lesson, and we clearly identify best practices for scaffolding lessons to one another and to the broader unit. When you have a clear roadmap, it becomes much easier to facilitate the journey for students. We provide that roadmap.

INITIATIVES

Leadership development and team-building takes more than a blind hike or trust fall. We know that learning is cemented through experience, so we have included a variety of challenges to connect theory to practice. These initiatives, or problem-solving activities, uniquely surface tension and challenge learners to think differently about their team and the leadership skills required to succeed. We offer a varying rule sets so each challenge can be adapted to meet the particular growth stage of your group. These experiences help anchor learner practice, understanding, and analysis of leadership skills.

In addition to the initiatives woven through lessons, each curriculum level includes a retreat plan full of initiatives to accelerate team building & leadership foundations early in the learning cycle.

CONVERSATIONS

Lessons experienced through intentional challenge do not speak for themselves. They need to be unpacked by participants – talked about, processed, informally and formally throughout the lesson. There is no clear learning cycle, so processing is often messy – occurring before, during, and after a challenge. We provide essential tools for  processing with learners through casual conversation, group deliberation, and personal reflection opportunities. Typically, the greatest growth occurs as learners wrestle through their conceptions of leadership together. Practical wisdom invites us to do the right thing in the right way at the right time. Processing invites participants to evaluate and grow their practical wisdom.

CASE STUDIES

In addition to working through simulated challenges, our curriculum provides case studies. These narratives invite learners to discuss leadership issues from a detached, 3rd-person perspective, analyzing and evaluating the situation. Through discussion and debate, learners surface multiple perspectives on the strengths, tools, and decisions relevant to the case. Learners are then pressed to construct an alternative way forward – through the case – formulating their approach, rationale, and process. We have found case studies provide great support to both challenges and theoretical discussions.

INTERVIEWS

If you want to be the best, you have to learn from the best. Aristotle suggests the best way to grow in character is to follow someone further ahead than you. Through interviews, we provide you with some incredible insights from successful leaders on a variety of topics. These can be used to flip the classroom, or to dissect as a group – as learners try to make sense of how these leaders approach their roles, what makes them tick, and why they have been successful.

COMMUNITY

We believe great leaders but be rooted in strong communities. Through coaching and conversation our curriculum provides you with the tools needed to cultivate strong notions of team, friendship, and mentorship. Learners must rely on one another to accomplish goals. They are given space to share their lives with each other, and they are invited to learn from leaders further down the road. Our curriculum lays a foundation for ongoing intentional team development, so learners have a transformational, shared experience.
