“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
It’s easy to read Twain and get excited, but we’ve all had mountain top experiences that haven‘t translated into lasting change. They haven’t refined our personal DNA.
We started Impact edVentures believing in the difference between observing and experiencing. Our one big idea is that our experiences can be game changers in a person’s life. Why is experience often named the greatest teacher? Because intentional experiences help to form our souls, to define us. Through challenge we are squeezed, pressed, and honed into stronger people. We discover who we are and what we’re made of. In the process, our passions surface and our skills sharpen. Choose your metaphor – a coal turned diamond under pressure, a spark catching fire in a tinderbox – challenging experiences alter our perspective in paradigm shifting ways.
“The experience gave me a taste of the real world. It’s easy to be consumed by our lives, forgetting there is a world that needs our attention. I see now you have to experience it to understand it. I am forever impacted by the people there – learning to be more appreciative, patient, loving, and genuinely satisfied with my life.” Sara
“My jaded perception of life was drastically changed because of my experience – the privilege to experience new cultures, see where history has been made, & gain an expanded understanding of life. Serving those in need changes the way you live each day, the career you choose, and the courage you walk in day to day.” David
“Exposure to poverty makes me grateful for the life I have been blessed with; more energy conscientious and appreciative of simple things like clean water. Seeing the corruption they face daily is a stark reminder of the benefits of living in a free and fair country. Connection with gracious, loving people instills in me a desire to continue serving. I am stronger today.” Mimi
“The experience was unlike any I’ve ever had – less an experience than an impression; a substantial change in my being. The people I met and the work I did gives me a sense of empowerment. The experience will color my heart forever.” Cale
“It’s hard to explain to people how the experience has affected me. I have a new trajectory in life and have redefined what I hope to accomplish. I keep my new friends close at heart and reflect on this experience daily. My hope is to find ways to help these other communities flourish.” Christer
